To answer this question, it’s best to self-assess where you are in your fitness journey. What you should do, as well as what you shouldn’t do, should be based on what your exercise routine has been over the last 30 to 60 days. For those who started a program at a fitness facility, simply try to mimic (as much as you can) your routine from the gym. For those who started a program at home with all your newfound time, start by walking. Walk, but walk with purpose! When you walk, pay attention to your breathing.  Focus on taking big breaths, then focus on keeping your shoulders back and your head up with your eyes fixed on what is in front of you and not down on a device.

So, what are the best exercises for beginners today? The answer is simple: keep it simple and stick to what you are comfortable with up to this point. Now is not the time to try something new that you are unfamiliar with or unsure of on proper form. The key is to master what you have been doing so far. That means if you’ve been squatting, then use a mirror and make sure your technique is perfect. If you’ve been working on pushups and can do 5, then try to get 6 pushups. Take whatever exercises (that are safe) and do more reps and perfect the technique.

Another component you can add to your program is deciding how you are going to look at your exercise routine. Decide to get excited about your program. Looking at exercise as a “get to” and not a “have to” will have a tremendous impact on how well you do in your workout that day, as well as how successful you are in reaching your goals.

Just remember, whatever you focus on you feel. Think about that for a minute. What you choose to focus on will play a big part in how you feel.
